ClaireB: but obviously working becuase you're here. :-) VanceS: considering 3 cables were snapped, not bad ClaireB: yeah ClaireB: so is twitter blocked there? VanceS: twitter and ning and flickr are all blocked to the general public ClaireB: aha VanceS: and skype ClaireB: i must say that twitter is fast becoming one of my favorite tools ClaireB: a lot of lab directors are on twitter, and we use it to exchange info VanceS: but it you know what you're doing you can get all of those ClaireB: aha VanceS: yeah, I wish I could hang out on it VanceS: I can't get it at work, can't run a VPN from here VanceS: I've got Pownce up and I see you are still working on wordcall ClaireB: have you tried that new site for travellers -- can't remember the name right now -- flopper or something ClaireB: ah dopplr ClaireB: http://www.dopplr.com/ DennisOl joined the room. VanceS: Hey Dennis DennisOl: Hey, Vance. Hi, Claire. ClaireB: hi dennis VanceS: I I looked at it ClaireB hugs dennis VanceS: didn't explore DennisOl hugs Claire right back VanceS: does it look good for you? ClaireB: yes. i love the graphic of the 2 people waving at each other from airplanes going in opposite directions! ClaireB: it's supposed to be a way for travellers to stay in touch DennisOl: What an image! VanceS: but I travel to get away! VanceS: ha VanceS: kiddin DennisOl: (waving from passing planes) ClaireB: there are now a lot of twitters who wil be going to sf for calico, and we're going to use it to stay in touch with one another while we are there DennisOl: Sounds interesting. ClaireB: ah, you travel because you can't help it. (me too) ClaireB: dennis, it's http://www.dopplr.com/ DennisOl: Thanks, Claire. VanceS: there's a lot on worldbridges channels about NECC and twitter VanceS: apparently the one in June will be the second twitter fest DennisOl left the room (signed off). ClaireB: twitter has hit the conference route; there will be a session at calico and also one at the upcoming NE IALLT conference DennisOl joined the room. ClaireB: what happens at the twitter fest, except that we all twitter at one another? VanceS: by session, you mean someone talking about twitter? ClaireB: wb, dennis VanceS: of a room full of people twittering in lieu of a presentation ClaireB: yes, i mean the topic of a conference session -- i suppose with a demo ClaireB: maybe both :-) ClaireB: what is the twitter fest? VanceS: If I were talking about twitter I'd have it up and use it to interact with the audience ClaireB: yes, you would! VanceS: that would be cool ClaireB: i must admit that i have shown twitter to dozens of people and most people don't get it VanceS: can do that for CALL academic session ClaireB: i will soon show it tomy call class DennisOl: Hi again. I was using a browser different from what I usually use and I opened the link Claire gave in another window but when I tried to close it, it closed the browser. VanceS: I've been bookmarking, you've seen my delicious links, yeah? VanceS: Yikes dennis ClaireB: a long time ago i saw them but not recently VanceS: good thing it was just us DennisOl: I haven't seen them recently, Vance. VanceS: http://del.icio.us/vancestevens/twitter ClaireB: are you going to be on the call academic session, vance? VanceS: yes, maybe in person if I time my request correctly DennisOl: Wow! Looks really good, Vance. VanceS: there's a great post that says it all VanceS: let me find it ClaireB: i made a page on twitter last semester: http://www.polyglot.pitt.edu/workshops/techfall07/twitter.html VanceS: http://gnuosphere.wordpress.com/2008/01/28/questioning-twitter/ VanceS: read the REPLIES to that one DennisOl: Very nice links. VanceS: good one claire, and tag you're it DennisOl: Claire, I especially like your summary of resources. ClaireB: yes, i had seen that blog posting NinaTL joined the room. DennisOl: Claire: I had no idea there were so many Twitter spin-offs! NinaTL hugs Vance, Claire, and Dennis DennisOl: Nina! Hugs! Agalitses! ClaireB hugs nina ClaireB: hi nina VanceS hugs everyone including stage hands DennisOl: hee hee hee NinaTL: Where are the stage hands? ClaireB: what most people say is that they don't like twitter at first,, and if they stick with it, they eventually like it DennisOl: ROTFL DennisOl imagines a somewhat surprised burly stagehand and his look of surprise ClaireB: dennis, i made that page last semester, and i'm sure that there are a lot more now DennisOl: Claire: Well, double Wow then! NinaTL: My problem is that I don't check it often enough and then when I do I don't have time to read all the stuff the people I'm following have posted, much less explore the links! DennisOl: I like Twitter, but I often don't remember to update daily. VanceS: if you just hit a couple of links you'll strike gold DennisOl: Good point, Vance. NinaTL: Yes, you're probably right VanceS: a glass even an eighth full is better than an empty one DennisOl: For sure! ClaireB: as i said before nina came in, a lot of lab directors are on twitter, and many of them are now cyberfirends becuase of twitter. i will meet many of them f2f in san francisco at calico, and i can't wait DennisOl: Sounds terrific, Claire! NinaTL: But even with all the great links I get here, at evonline_2002, baw08, etc all I usually do is bookmark them and (often) forget them DennisOl: I've always wanted to attend Calico. I look forward to hearing about it via Twitter. NinaTL: Claire, you know Steve Sharp, don't you? VanceS: J Krishnamurti had a ramble about chasing one's tail, which in cyberterms means trying to grab ALL the tweets off a twitter stream NinaTL: my colleague at MEI now ClaireB: some of them are priceless. there is a guy at yale who jokes about always having his identicons lined up in even rows. :-) NinaTL: I believe he's going DennisOl: Steve Sharp is at the MEI now? ClaireB: oh yes quite well, and he works with you now NinaTL: Yes NinaTL: You know him too Dennis? VanceS: yeah I noticed he'd changed jobs NinaTL: He joined us last summer as our CALL coordinator DennisOl: No, but I follow him on Twitter. Someone told me he was a mutual colleague. NinaTL: maybe me! ClaireB: and he's getting married this summer? DennisOl: Maybe you were the one, Nina. NinaTL: Yes NinaTL: I haven't met his intended though ClaireB: i am trying to convince him to bring her to calico NinaTL: He twitters a lot ClaireB: yes he does NinaTL: He's taking her to TESOL DennisOl: Yes, he does. NinaTL: She is also an ESL teacher I think ClaireB: ooh, i didn't know that she's going to tesol VanceS: met on twitter? NinaTL: But he twitters like me, not so much techie stuff, more like "freezing here today, just got back from class sort of thing DennisOl: I look forward to following the Webheads in NYC via Nina's blog. ClaireB: yes, different people use twitter for different purposes NinaTL: I hope it works as well as last year's blog did! That's my favorite blog DennisOl: Those non-technical twits are refreshing. ClaireB: one of my firends is seriously working out ways to use twitter for foreign language classes DennisOl: Yes, last year's blog was outstanding. I think this year's will be the same. ClaireB: have you heard of twtitter camp? ClaireB: twittercamp DennisOl: It seems a natural for foreign languages. NinaTL: no DennisOl: I've only heard the name. Diganos mas! NinaTL: Thanks, Dennis ClaireB: i haven't been able to get it to work, but it displays a bunch of twits on a big screen at the same time VanceS: ?? ClaireB: she is using it for a french class DennisOl: Hmm. Why a bunch of twits? ClaireB: i think then they discuss and analyze them NinaTL: What is Snitter? DennisOl: I would think single twits would work quite well. NinaTL: I see Joao posts from snitter ClaireB: an application that people use to connect to twitter NinaTL: I have been falling behind in baw08 this week ClaireB: a lot of people don't like to use their browser for twitter -- me, i do NinaTL: I wanted to try a podcast but never got round to it VanceS: what kind of application? DennisOl: http://www.polyglot.pitt.edu/workshops/techfall07/twitter.html VanceS: oh, i see ClaireB: there are many spinoffs DennisOl: Nina: You'll see Snitter on Claire's list (the URL I posted). VanceS: Snitter "I can't believe it's not twitter" http://snook.ca/snitter/ VanceS: from Claire's resource list NinaTL: How can you create a podcast with another person in cyberspace? VanceS: skype ClaireB: a lot of people seem to like jaiku NinaTL: Record a conversation in Skype...and upload it somewhere? ClaireB: nina, like a dual recording? DennisOl: Why, Claire? ClaireB: i don't know NinaTL: for example, an interview NinaTL: or just a conversation DennisOl: Recording in Skype isn't always easy/ VanceS: yes, but you need to run PowerGramo to get both sides of the conversaton NinaTL: one of the problems I have with creating a podcast is that I have no ideas for content NinaTL: PowerGramo? Is it free? is it big? DennisOl: Right, Vance--PowerGramo or something similar. VanceS: How about a podcast entitled: "come on, gimme some ideas!" ClaireB: you can also use totalrecorder, which i think is about $10 DennisOl: http://www.powergramo.com/ ClaireB: vance :-) VanceS: you skype people and nag them for ideas, great format NinaTL: Would it also work with YM w/ voice? VanceS: it wold probably catch on DennisOl: Total Recorder: DennisOl: http://www.highcriteria.com/ VanceS: worldbridges channel has edtech brainstorm, 20th century learning DennisOl: Claire: Any idea when/if YM will offer voice for Macs? VanceS: there's probably a niche in podcasting for people trying to figure out the technology NinaTL: I don't listen to podcasts much--but my role model is Anne Fox's Absolutely Intercultural. It's so professional, interesting, awesome ClaireB: i thought that it has audio already, but anyhow most mac users use ichat VanceS: wow, I'm supposed to be on it tonight NinaTL: I've tried a couple of times over the past year with Odeo and Podomatic DennisOl: I have iChat and have for a long time. NinaTL: AI? NinaTL: iChat? ClaireB: ichat comes with macs DennisOl: But YM still doesn't have voice for Macs. NinaTL: I wonder if that is related to Yahoo's financial difficulties VanceS: if you want to use skype you can study the book of webcasting ClaireB: which is why mac users tend not to use it VanceS: the first lesson is about recording both sides of skype NinaTL: My husband told me Microsoft is trying to acquire Yahoo VanceS: for 4.5 billion dollars ClaireB: yes, that has been in the news. 44 billion, i thought VanceS: 44 billion? NinaTL: I mostly IM people anyway, I rarely do VoIP for some reason VanceS: at that quantum, ??? NinaTL: I don't remember but 44 billion sounds more like a war in Iraq DennisOl: Right (re Mac users), Claire. ClaireB: just looked it up, and it's 45 billion NinaTL: omg VanceS: why doesn't microsoft just buy the war in Iraq from Halliburton? ClaireB: nina, i think that would be one **day** in iraq DennisOl: Wow! The very idea of Microsoft buying Yahoo blows me away! NinaTL: Then they could stop it! DennisOl: Hear, hear, Vance! ClaireB: great idea, vance NinaTL wishes she could laugh DennisOl: Nina: No, they'd just wait for two years and then give us updates every time we logged on to our computer. VanceS: I wonder if 44 billion a day has anything to do with the economy in the US NinaTL: Duh! DennisOl: I'm sure it must. ClaireB: which is down the toilet NinaTL: in a big way DennisOl: Definitely! NinaTL: Do any of you statesiders have primaries this Tuesday? NinaTL: Ours is the 12th ClaireB: nah, in pennsylvania, we don't get to vote until april DennisOl: Arizona's is Tuesday. NinaTL: I thought it would be decided this week but at dinner last night several friends agreed it might not ClaireB: the kids are excited about obama, and i'm all for him NinaTL: I still haven't really decided DennisOl: And on the cheery note, I'm going to fill up my coffee cup. DennisOl: I'm for Obama, too. NinaTL: I always vote in primaries but usually my vote doesn't matter because of Super Tuesday VanceS: at least the choices are much better than in the past ClaireB: vance, did you know that caroline kennedy and ted kennedy are supporting obama? NinaTL: If it really matters, I will have to start thinking harder! NinaTL: Ted, yes VanceS: yep, we get CNN, BBC, Al Jazira VanceS: which is a great channel, btw ClaireB: i heard that caroline;s kids talked her into it NinaTL: Is it from UAE or Qatar? VanceS: there was a sicko program on this morning about american's crossing the border for medicines ClaireB: yes, i used to watch al jazeera in egypt VanceS: it's qatar based but very international and professional in tone NinaTL: One friend feels that Clinton has been through the wringer and come out the stronger for it ClaireB: do you mean crossing into canada VanceS: into Mexico, but Canada too NinaTL: because they are cheaper or because they aren't available here? ClaireB: believe it or not, when i was in brazil, i was interviewed by the new english channel for al-jazeera! MoiraH joined the room. ClaireB: hi moira MoiraH: Hello everybody ClaireB hugs moira VanceS: cheaper and also not available VanceS: hey moi ClaireB: vance, that has been going on for decades NinaTL hugs Moira MoiraH hugs this small group NinaTL: I wonder where the newbies are NinaTL: They've been good about attending synch sessions ClaireB: one famous case was when steve mcQueen had cancer; he went to mexico to buy medicine VanceS: yes, but Michael Moore just made his movie last year, and the al jazira program was reminscent of that MoiraH: wELL? THERE ARE TWO LIVE SESSIONS TODAY THAT i KNOW OF BUT PROBABLY MORE AS i HAVEN4T BEEN ABLE TO 4FOLLOW4 WELL THIS WEEK VanceS: plus it's an issue in the race this year MoiraH: oooh, sorry for the shouting ClaireB: it's good that they are drawing people's attention to it NinaTL: I don't think there are any in baw today VanceS: did someone raise one's voice just now? MoiraH: lol ClaireB: moira, we can't hear you :-) RickRo joined the room. NinaTL: louder pls NinaTL: Hi Rick ClaireB: hi rick MoiraH: I'll put my headset on :-) ClaireB hugs rick RickRo: Ahlan! VanceS: hey rick? RickRo: I've had trouble logging in.... VanceS: ahlan beek, keefak ClaireB: what is beek keefak RickRo: kul she tamem! VanceS: ahlan means welcome NinaTL: Arabic, certainly MoiraH: now, that is not my keyboard ..... ClaireB: yes, i know ahlad VanceS: ahlan beek means welcome to you VanceS: (back) ClaireB: ah MoiraH: idem ClaireB: chokran VanceS: Keef means how (are you) NinaTL: shukran? RickRo: hugs claire VanceS: keefak means how are you, sorry RickRo: shukran wazeelan! RickRo: hummus! VanceS: kul shai tammam, everything copacetic NinaTL: Rick, are you learning Arabic now or did it know it before going to the middle east? NinaTL: did you VanceS: shukran is thank you NinaTL: I know that one ClaireB: yes we know NinaTL: My Arab students taught me back in the 70s RickRo: I am forever trying to learn Arabic, mostly from watching TV and listening to the radio, Nina ClaireB: vance, are you fluent in arabic? NinaTL: I understand it is extremely difficult RickRo: I lack a certain, well, discipline.... NinaTL: LOL VanceS: not fluent, conversant perhaps MoiraH: have you ever taken lessons Vance? NinaTL: I read a book about the origin of language MoiraH: As you are there in the world NinaTL: The author was a Semiticist and he gave a lot of examples from Arabic RickRo: I have a full library of books on Learning arabic--they look great! VanceS: I have taken lessons which I wrote about in an article I'm supposed to discuss with Anne Fox tonight ClaireB: arabic is extremely popular in the states now; my university now has 6-7 arabic instructors MoiraH: ah! VanceS: I have a fomula for an arabic class VanceS: or for any language ClaireB: yes? RickRo: I just interviewed 60 candidates for a program where english teachers here get to teach arabic in the US... MoiraH listening VanceS: you need a teacher / informant NinaTL: He used it as a "worst-case" example, as in, if I can explain how X might in Arabic could have evolved, I can explain how anything in language might have evolved VanceS: perhaps a tape recorder or iRiver VanceS: and bring a newspaper to class in case you need anything to talk about NinaTL: It was very interesting! VanceS: but other than that yuo just let it roll VanceS: oh, rule #1 VanceS: NO ENGLISH VanceS: arabic only RickRo: Shoo! MoiraH: of course not! VanceS: get other students to agree DennisOl: This conversation is fascinating! VanceS: and that is an arabic course NinaTL: It's amazing how Arabs pick up oral English so quickly DennisOl: I'd love to learn Arabic that way. ClaireB: on my campus there is a series of movies about the middle east, and on friday we had a movie about um kulthum RickRo: Everyone knows Arabic is too difficult to learn without English..... {:-{>} VanceS: arabic teachers who will do that are hard to find NinaTL: yet written English is SO difficult for them DennisOl: I think that's because they're part of an oral culture, Nina. NinaTL: I think my young Qataris have hardly ever read a book in their lives, otehr than the Quran I suppose VanceS: I had a sudanese colleague NinaTL: Yes, Dennis, I think you are right NinaTL: They have an amazing ear VanceS: we were talking about why americans / europeans read while commuting VanceS: and arabs in general don't NinaTL: When they write they aren't used to thinking about the vowels so their spelling is atrocious ClaireB: why vance DennisOl: It doesn't surprise me, Vance. DennisOl: But they talk, I imagine. VanceS: the sudanese guy said school teachers won't just send kids to a library NinaTL: What do Arabs do while commuting? Chat, probbaly RickRo: Nina, now I know why I can't spell.... VanceS: if the kid picks out an unapproved book it's the teacher's fault NinaTL: LOL MoiraH: because Europeans live in a cold country and don't like communicating unless they have to DennisOl: Moira! Hugs! MoiraH hugs Dennis back VanceS: this is serious, they are covertly discouraged from browsing books DennisOl hugs Moira back again! DennisOl: The danger of the printed word? ClaireB: yes very serious MoiraH: why? NinaTL: I realized last semester that some Muslims are actually discouraged from reading fiction RickRo: I love to give out books to schools and students here--there just aren't that many books around DennisOl: Shades of Solomon Rushdie! VanceS: the ideas in teh books must be understood to be acceptable first ClaireB: rick does that make you popular or get you in trouble? RickRo: both.... DennisOl: Not surprising, Rick. ClaireB: then keep it up :-) NinaTL: I have one Qatari student who is repeating my class this semester. I just went to the library and picked out a bunch of little biographies for him. RickRo: one must be very careful about the illustrations in any reading material.... DennisOl: Hear, hear (re "Then keep it up!")! NinaTL: I hope to get him to read one a day for a while so his fluency will improve and he will get some confidence in his reading DennisOl: Oh, for sure. VanceS: I'm talking about school kids growing up in muslim countries DennisOl: Vance: And? VanceS: in college it changes, but the mindset is already established NinaTL: Rick, are you in the UAE? I forgot DennisOl: I would definitely think so. ClaireB: rick is in jordan NinaTL: ok RickRo: I'm in Amman, bur work all around the Levant ClaireB: or based in jordan NinaTL: Who employs you? DennisOl: Do you find Jordanians different from Lebanese, Rick? NinaTL: Levant = ? exactly RickRo: Office of English language programs, bureau of educational and cultural affiars, dept of state NinaTL: thx RickRo: I haven't made it to Lebanon yet--the difference is great from the folks I've met DennisOl: Levant: DennisOl: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levant RickRo: I work in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, Jordan, Iraw RickRo: Iraq, that is DennisOl: Leant #2: DennisOl: http://lexicorient.com/e.o/levant.htm RickRo: also 'il shams' in Arabic DennisOl: Il Shams: thanks. NinaTL: very interesting--I am reading the etymology of the word RickRo: fertile crescent.... VanceS: do you get to Iraq and Palestine much? VanceS: Gaza at all? NinaTL: Is tehre any problem going to Israel and then the Arab countries? Do you need to have 2 passports? RickRo: I just came back from Jericho. We do some work in Gaza--I can't go there right now, though. Iraq I help out with programming RickRo: I own multiple passports for all my traveling NinaTL: Is it dangerous to go to Iraq? RickRo: Yep NinaTL: I would think so NinaTL: How often do you get to come back here? NinaTL: for vacation RickRo: I will mostly help out from afar but will get there at some point--I'll be there for TESOL. To the states every year or other year outside of work NinaTL: Great, looking forward to meeting you at TESOL DennisOl: Give Rick a hug for me at TESOL, Nina! RickRo: It should be fun--I like the big apple in small doses.... RickRo: {:-{>} VanceS: Rick was in Seattle ClaireB: rick usually shows up at tesol NinaTL: but I never encountered him in Seattle ClaireB: nor i NinaTL: Three days is a small dose VanceS: I went to his presentation, saw him there RickRo: I had a crazy schedule. I'll be at our booth a lot--Office of English Language Programs ClaireB: so has george wilcox finally retired, rick? MoiraH: me neither - I don't think RickRo: George is retired--to Arizoni! NinaTL: Of course I knew you were coming--I already invited you to be an author on the blog NinaTL: bad memory DennisOl: Rick: I used to be part of an interethnic community that had Lebanese, Syrians, and Jordanians as "fringe" members. Those three groups had BIG problems getting along with each other. RickRo: nods ClaireB: many years ago i used to work for george in colorado RickRo: There was just a brohaha about Fairuz singing in Syria.... DennisOl: Arizona, huh? NinaTL: I hope you will be able to make dinner with the webheads at least one night Rick JoanneMa joined the room. MoiraH: Hi Joanne RickRo: Lots of RELOs end up there--I will end up there at some point RickRo: When is the WH dinner? MoiraH: yes, when Nina? JoanneMa left the room. NinaTL: Ronaldo Lima is the newest addition to the blog, he's coming to NY RickRo: Hi Joanne! DennisOl: How wonderful that Ronaldo will be there! RickRo: Nina, is he from Brasil? DennisOl: Yes--Brasilia. RickRo: ...related to the soccer player? MoiraH: don't think so RickRo: {:-{D} NinaTL: My guess is--probably not! but who knows? VanceS: WH dinners are every night RickRo: Great! MoiraH: true- are you going Vance? NinaTL: We have to eat ClaireB: yes, ronaldo is from brasilia, and i met him there DennisOl: Will there be one big one, Vance / Nina? VanceS: well, I was thinking to try to get over there for my presentation NinaTL: If so I hope not on Tuesday night because I will not be there yet MoiraH: last time, you weren't sure - GREAT! RickRo: Brazil is a horrible place RickRo: don't go! NinaTL: ??? VanceS: I'm not sure NinaTL: I know lots of people who just love Brazil ClaireB: rick, que mentiroso!!!!!!!!! NinaTL: and Brazilians! ClaireB: i loved it RickRo: The sun is full or radiation; the beaches are all sandy, the water is salty and the women.... DennisOl: Here's one of Ronaldo's blogs: ClaireB: 'shut up rick DennisOl: http://my5a.blogspot.com/ NinaTL: You are pulling our cyberlegs MoiraH: now, now RIck with the roving eye RickRo: don't show much modesty on the beach! Horrible! MoiraH: don't look ;-) DennisOl: "Que mentiroso": ROTFL ClaireB: i had an absolutely wonderful time there last summer RickRo: I never do.... VanceS: I know, I was shocked when I was there ClaireB: yeah, i called rick a liar VanceS ;-) RickRo: In all my years there, I only noticed my girlfriend. {:-{>} ClaireB: yeah riiiiiiight NinaTL: how many years Rick? DennisOl: hee hee hee VanceS: du jour? DennisOl chuckles RickRo: I have been going to Brazil for 20 + years and have lived there for 5 MoiraH: now, at this point, I want toknow how to blow raspberries in TI - anybody know ;-) DennisOl: ROTFL! RickRo: As I said, it's horrible! VanceS: if you have to think of your girlfriend, I guess it would be RickRo: That's why I keep going back and suffer from saudades! ClaireB: shut your mouth MoiraH: details please, you guys - I've never been there DennisOl: In English comics, raspberries are often PFLPPPPP! NinaTL: That's good DennisOl: "Saudades": one of those not-quite-translatable words. RickRo: worse--she did macumba on me and now we're married... DennisOl: I'm interested in Macumba and Candomle. RickRo: candomble too! RickRo: We know many practicioners. It's fascinating... NinaTL: How does your wife like living in Jordan? RickRo: Moira, look for Ilha Grande. It's my favorite place (among many) in Brasil. RickRo: She likes it--because she is wife #1, Nina DennisOl: Rick (and all): Have you heard of the Sisterhood of the Good Death? DennisOl: http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/4328/eindex.htm NinaTL: LOL MoiraH: SUpersonic Dennis - have you got the link already? DennisOl: Yes, but I knew what I was looking for, so it was easy to find. DennisOl: See the gallery, in particular: DennisOl: http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/4328/eindex.htm DennisOl: Ilha Grande: DennisOl: http://www.ilhagrande.com.br/ DennisOl: Rick: I once knew someone who became Yemanja for the water ceremony. RickRo: cool--yemaja is my favorite DennisOl: Very cool deity. RickRo: Of course, I have more in common with eixo... DennisOl: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yemaja DennisOl: Don't know Eixo. RickRo: Devil figure, but I'm not spelling it right.... RickRo: I've been reading in Gallego and now I can't spell anything.... DennisOl: No, your spelling is OK. RickRo: Speaking of Brazil, the carnival is up and running. Moira, now is a good time to visit Rio or Salvador or Recife. VanceS: can you find places to stay? RickRo: There is always room on the beach! {:-{>} MoiraH: Oh, I'd love to but it won't be this year :-( Maybe next VanceS: (webheads have lots of friends but maybe not n those places DennisOl: Rick: Maybe Esu/Eshu? DennisOl: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orisha RickRo: Olinda's really fun too. Personally, I prefer the smaller places. Did manage to "desfilar" twice in Rio, though. MoiraH: that must have been fun - what did you wear? AmandaRos joined the room. RickRo: I was a farofeiro one year and a borboleta the next! It's quite the experience to go through the sambodromo dancing with thousands of others in a samba school AmandaRos left the room. DennisOl: Olinda Flickr Set: DennisOl: http://tinyurl.com/26flr4 RickRo: you are so fast off the draw, Dennis! RickRo: remind me not to challenge you to a duel... DennisOl smiles MoiraH: yesp, that's why I call him Supersonic :-) DennisOl chuckles MoiraH: I don't even try to find something if Dennis is here :-) DelinC joined the room. DennisOl: Hi, Delin. ClaireB: dennis is our personal google RickRo: Hi Delin! ClaireB: hi delin DelinC: Hi. Bow deeply to you all! VanceS: hi all NinaTL: Hi Delin DennisOl bows back MoiraH: Hello Delin VanceS . o O ( flickr blocked, at work ) RickRo: got to keep you honest, Vance DelinC: Do you know Jeff- Learning and sharing online together? DelinC: Yes. VanceS: the mainland seems pretty gridlocked right now DelinC: After two days-- Wedn. It's belonging to Lunar Year in Chinese tradition. DennisOl: http://www.chinesefortunecalendar.com/NewYearDays.htm DelinC: Thanks! DennisOl: And the new year will be a year of the rat, right? DennisOl: Bu ke xi! RickRo: I can never remember what animal I am.... Anyone else born in '59. 1959 not 1859. DelinC: yes. DelinC: Rat Year in Chinese Lunar Year! NinaTL: I think I am Ox. 1949? DelinC: Yes. NinaTL: Does anyone know who Clare Bell is? MoiraH: yes Nina, I have to refuse invites as I get so many and at the end of the day, I'm a member but never get there to contribute, so now I apply 'selective acceptance' as I just can't be everywhere ClaireB: nope DennisOl: dennis dot oliver at cox dot net DelinC: so I go to knowplces site? ClaireB: i must go, so goodbye everyone DennisOl: Take care, Claire. It was good to connect! NinaTL: Bye Claire, have a good week ClaireB left the room (signed off). DennisOl: Abraços! ThomasLev joined the room. DorisM: Hi, Thomas! VanceS: actually Doris, speaking of chats and writing matrix ThomasLev: hello! VanceS: that's the topic of one of them this evening VanceS: He Tom VanceS: at 16:00 in WiZiQ NinaTL: Hey, Tom VanceS: blogging4educators DorisM: yes... What's happening this evening and where? ThomasLev: Nina how's the accreditation thing going? VanceS: Blogstreams is 21:00 GMT VanceS: at tappedin NinaTL: Thanks, Tom, it's going... I guess NinaTL: I don't have time to do more than attending meetings VanceS: SMiELT at 20:00 http://dekita.org/smielt/ NinaTL: I always prefer to work on my classes NinaTL: (overload this semester) NinaTL: thx Vance NinaTL: We have decent drafts for most standards ThomasLev: we have constant overload---and the person doing accrediting (at your same schedule) is now moving to Fairbanks DorisM left the room (signed off). DorisM joined the room. NinaTL: I have to write some small things and then will be putting it together in June/July ThomasLev: aha NinaTL: Oh no, how will that affect the process? DennisOl: Tom! How's by you? ThomasLev: don't know...we've written very little ThomasLev: ok Dennis.. NinaTL: Will another coordinator have to be chosen in midstream? DennisOl: Great, Tom. NinaTL: I know what you mean by constant overload DennisOl: I'll be at Blogstreams Salon, Nina. ThomasLev: don't know that either NinaTL: There were so many standards we had to make significant changes to meet NinaTL: like we didn't have a working curriculum! DennisOl: Tom: I wouldn't want to be in Fairbanks right now! NinaTL: LOL DennisOl: Nina: I know the feeling about no working curriculum. ThomasLev: 30 below for over a month VanceS: why not? cold? NinaTL: Now everything has to be quantifiable and documented NinaTL: What a bore! VanceS: oh NinaTL: It feels like public school ThomasLev: but better than accreditation, I guess! DennisOl: When I worked for ELS many years ago, I was in the Curriculum Development Department. DorisM left the room (signed off). DorisM joined the room. DennisOl: At that time, there were over 20 ELS schools in the U.S. and each had a different curriculum. NinaTL: There's less wiggle-room in the schedule to play with web tools DennisOl: Doris: WB again and again. NinaTL: Everything is about achieving learning outcomes BeyzaY joined the room. NinaTL: Hi Beyza DorisM left the room (signed off). VanceS: hey beyaa BeyzaY: hi all ThomasLev: Hi Beyza VanceS: beyza I mean DennisOl: I've been through that (learning outcomes), too, Nina--at ASU. DennisOl: Beyza: Merhaba! BeyzaY: I hope u re all fine BeyzaY: merhaba Dennis nasılsın? DennisOl: Iyiyem, Beyza. How about you? BeyzaY: ben de iyiyiim tesekkurler BeyzaY: I'm relaxed as I have one more week VanceS: of what? holiday? DennisOl: Iyi olduguna sevindim ben de iyiyim, Beyza! BeyzaY: yes BeyzaY: semester break VanceS: where are you spendng it? NinaTL: Beyza, I just got an email from the first Turkish student I ever had, back in 1974 NinaTL: He found me on facebook VanceS: cool NinaTL: Isn't that cool? BeyzaY D u re fantastic learner : D RickRo: small world! BeyzaY: wauw DennisOl: That's what FaceBook is for, right, Nina? NinaTL: Yes, Dennis NinaTL: and it worked NinaTL: I have my maiden name listed there and that is how he found me BeyzaY: facebook is really heplful in that way DennisOl: Beyza: I have a file of Turkish phrases--most of them supplied by you! NinaTL: So that's your secret Dennis! BeyzaY: u have your own vocab journal then DennisOl: Teşekkür ederim, Beyza! DennisOl: Yep. That's my secret, Nina. VanceS: I keep excel files on phrases when I study a language online BeyzaY: I can suppy u with more if U want Dennis DennisOl: Yes, I'd like that, Beyza. VanceS: we should start a turkish class DorisM joined the room. BeyzaY: well I've never been that organized u guys are cool DennisOl: Definitely, Vance! DorisM left the room (signed off). DennisOl: I guess Doris is having connection problems. DorisM joined the room. NinaTL: Doris, you are extremely peripatetic today! VanceS: revolving door ThomasLev: she's door-slamming DorisM: peripatetic? DorisM: ok... NinaTL: constantly moving DorisM: yes.. DorisM: you don't use it .. you lose it.. DorisM: I guess... sorry... DennisOl: peripatetic: DennisOl: http://www.onelook.com/?w=peripatetic&ls=a NinaTL: Reminds me of that old joke, "Watch out for that revolving door! NinaTL: "What door door door door door? VanceS :-) DennisOl: (I LOVE onelook.com) ThomasLev: no problem, Doris, stick around, have a cup of coffee RickRo: ouch! NinaTL: LOL DennisOl: Nina: ROTFL BeyzaY smiles RickRo: rotfl? NinaTL: "Watch out for that cliff!" DorisM: That's funny...been there all the time NinaTL: What cliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiif? RickRo: ouch NinaTL sees that Rick does not appreciate her jokes DennisOl . o O ( said in a falling tone ;-) ) DafneG joined the room. DennisOl: Dafne! Abrazos! BeyzaY: hello daf DorisM: Hola Daf!!!!! NinaTL hugs Daf DafneG hugs and kisses everybody on both cheeks ThomasLev: Hi Dafne! BeyzaY: my new facebook friend DafneG -) DorisM: abrazos y la ola.... DennisOl hace lo mismo NinaTL: I saw that (Beyza and Daf in facebook) BeyzaY: ;) DafneG: I had not visited FB for a while. Too busy at the moment :-( BjB joined the room. NinaTL: I would guess you are a bit on the busy side, Daf DafneG hugs BJ NinaTL: Hi BJ ThomasLev: Hi BJ! DennisOl: You? Busy? ;-) BeyzaY: hi bj DennisOl: Hi, BJ. Hugs! BjB waves an enthusiastic hi and hugs warmly DennisOl waves back just as enthusiastically VanceS waves back too from way over here DafneG: I have also been away from these meetings for a while :-( VanceS: nice to see you again DennisOl: Dafne: So even for you, there are only 24 hours in a day? DafneG: Sunday is the only day to sleep DennisOl: Then sleep is exactly what you should do! DafneG: I need 100 hours in a day, Dennis DennisOl: And even 100 hours wouldn't be enough, I think! DafneG: and I would be asking for more ;-) MoiraH: Back again - Hi Beyza, Daf, Bj DennisOl: Honestly, I don't know how you do it, Dafne. You are SUPER organized to be able to juggle all the things that you do. DennisOl: I tip my hat to you! DorisM: sounds and feels familiar DennisOl: I bet, Doris! DafneG: or not organized at all, he he BeyzaY: think Daf always wears a superwoman tshirt DennisOl: No, you're definitely organized. DorisM: this is what is like in this world? DennisOl: I think so, too, Beyza. BeyzaY D ThomasLev: who has time for organization? DafneG: I don´t use agendas, everything is on my head DafneG: or in my head???? DennisOl: That's what I mean by super-organized! DorisM: try to keep one but I always forget where it is... NinaTL: If I didn't have my agenda (and now, my google calendar), I wouldn't remember to do anything DennisOl: It could be either in or on your head, but I think it's in your head. NinaTL: I love my google calendar! VanceS: it takes a clear mind to cope with a cluttered desk DennisOl: For sure, Vance! DorisM: in my head.... oh my... not a good place... DafneG: I like my GC but I never check it MoiraH: I like that Vance, as mine is always cluttered, plus the floor around it ;-) DennisOl: And my mind and my desk are the same: filled with flotsam and jetsam. VanceS is suspicious of people with spotless desktops DennisOl: Me, too, Vance! MoiraH: and of course, my cats are on the papers anyway DorisM: but we all used our dear friends as agendas... DennisOl: I am a bundle of loose ends trying to be a knot! VanceS: what does your desk look like Daf? DafneG . o O ( wow, it feels good to hear others' desktops are cluttered ) NinaTL: I have to keep a neat desk or I feel awful NinaTL: It depends on personality DorisM: there is always around to remind us of things happening at wiziq for example NinaTL: Some people can find their stuff in the midst of what looks like chaos to me DennisOl: Nina: My whole life has been spent in pursuit of a neat desk. NinaTL: but I can't MoiraH: the desktop on my pc is like confetti - until I decide to sweep it up from time to time NinaTL: Dennis, I knew we were kindred spirits DennisOl: I can accomplish that for a few days at a time, but then things get "interesting" again. VanceS: my organization model is top of pile, bottom of pile DennisOl: Makes sense, Vance. NinaTL: There are "vertical" and "horizontal" filers NinaTL: I am a vertical filer VanceS: and somewhere in the pile BeyzaY: I'm also really disorganized BeyzaY: yes it depends on the personality NinaTL: I can't find stuff if it's laid everywhere DafneG: I have piles of things related to all the different things I do.Since I do so many things at the same time, no way I can keep my desk neatly organized or just organized DennisOl: A while back, I was really pleased with myself: I made a desktop megafolder and kept lots and lots of other folders inside it. MoiraH: I do now have a huge whiteboard opposite me on which I write the MUST DO things and then take great pleasure when I can rub them out NinaTL: Maybe I share some visual/spatial challenges with my daughter! ThomasLev: I need to do to my office desk what a computer crash just did to my desktop :-) DennisOl: That worked quite well for about a week. Now my desktop (computer) matches my other desktop (real). NinaTL: Ouch, Tom DennisOl: Oy! NinaTL: I use folders on my computer desktop, like "current docs" "current schedules" DorisM: that sounds like a great idea, moira DennisOl: Oh, I do, too, Nina . . . but I have too many of them. VanceS: I use an excel file to date tasks in one column and sort them by date and time BeyzaY: we reallyh have the same problem Dennis DafneG: I try to keep my computer desktop with the least number of icons and things DennisOl: Now that sounds organized to me, Vance: using Excel. DennisOl: I agree, Beyza. BeyzaY :) ThomasLev: I like this Excel system ThomasLev: sounds good VanceS: excel is a good project manager DennisOl: And your whiteboard idea is a good one, too, Moira. DafneG: My documents are organized with folders and it is easy to find my stuff DennisOl: Except in my case, I would probably end up adding another whiteboard . . . and another . . . . DorisM: and there we go... don't know much about excel... DennisOl: Actually, I can find my stuff pretty easily. The "phrases" file is a good example. BeyzaY smiles BeyzaY: that's also a skills Dennis DennisOl smiles back DafneG: I try to avoid excel, it reminds me of my statistics classes, and of the budgets I need to prepare every trimester :-( DorisM: a new challenge to add to my never ending list... I's stubborn like a mule... BeyzaY: finding the necessary file when you need even it seems disorganized DennisOl: Budgets! Oy! It gives me a headache even to THINK of them! VanceS: I'lve got to go pick up bobbi DorisM: hugs to Bobby! DennisOl: Give her my best, Vance. Give her a hug, too! ThomasLev: take care Vance ThomasLev: brb BeyzaY: cya sson Vance DafneG: I need to prepare a budget every 4 months for each of the graduate programs I coordinate DennisOl: Ma-a al-salaamah, Vance! DafneG: say hi to Bobbi NinaTL: Bye Vance, c u soon MoiraH: Bye Vance VanceS: ok nice seeing everyone MoiraH: Qnyone zqnt to join Lqine in Exploring the Big Qpple VanceS: maybe I'll see you online again tonight MoiraH: http://home.learningtimes.net/learningtimes?login=1&uid=8C2692662E1BA06A38EA52920EDAF93F&rememberme=on&cid=157024&error=1&go=273662 MoiraH: Zebheqds roo; DennisOl: Likewise, Vance. Thanks for the message about buthaina_3. MoiraH: ouch - Webheads room VanceS: Zebheqds roo VanceS: on that note ... VanceS left the room (signed off). 2008.02.03 06:12:27 Signoff |
